The Body Shop Cucumber Cleansing Milk and Cucumber Freshening Water - Review

I wasn't going to review anything skincare related until later but technically I use The Body Shop Cucumber Cleansing Milk as a make-up remover so it's not related to skincare (haa!).

What The Body Shop has to say about the Cucumber Cleansing Milk on their website:
"Best if you want to: Wash away excess oil, makeup and impurities with a refreshing cleansing milk that gently cleanses without drying to leave skin feeling soft, smooth and refreshed."
It is suited for all skin types and is a part of The Body Shop "Original" range of products that they brought back a few months ago. I bought this on May 8th(?) during the $5 gift box promotion where you buy a box for $5 and everything you can fit in the box is 50% off. The original price is $8.99 but with the promotion it was $4.50.
The instructions say, "Massage over the face and neck, using fingertips. Wipe away using a tissue or rinse off with clean water."
I personally do not tissue it off because I find it a waste of tissue especially if I do it daily. I'm trying to reduce my carbon foot print, aren't you? Anyway it smells like the Vaseline Aloe Fresh Hydrating Body Lotion and personally, I'm not fond of the scent. The texture of the Cucumber Cleansing Milk is like a milky lotion (light) that is gentle & two nickel sized dollops of this is enough for the whole face. I use it on a dry face. I've tried using the toner to moisten my face for the cleansing milk but it made my face skin & burn ... yikes. Try it on a dry face or regular water.. don't be silly like me!
Anyhow, it works well for removing tinted moisturizer, primer, powder foundation, any light make-up but not heavy duty liquid or cream foundation. It definitely doesn't get rid of waterproof mascara either and it kind of stings the eye so I use a separate eye make-up remover for that. I have to follow up with another cleanser because like I said, I use this only to remove make-up only. It's kind of like a cleansing oil I guess but I've never used a cleansing oil before so I can't do a real comparison. This doesn't dry out my skin either and even after my second cleanse, my skin is fine. The only reason why I use this to remove my make-up is because it contains no detergents that dry out my skin and it works for the days I wear little to no make-up. For $4.50, I'd recommend it but for $8.99, I'd go with something heavy duty.

Next we have The Body Shop Cucumber Freshening Water which is more or less a toner. Or water with a cucumber scent.. It doesn't do much but reassure me that all my make-up is off and my face is clean. It's quite refreshing especially if you leave the bottle in the fridge but I'm not fond of the scent. It smells exactly like the cleansing milk, blegh! Overall, for $4.99 I can't ask for more. I could just use cold water instead though... I wouldn't recommend this unless you want a refreshing facial mist/spray for the summer because that's what I'm using it for.
Bottom line: It doesn't set mineral make up, work as a pre-make up spray or keep make-up fresh. It's just refreshing, alright?

I have heard that linalool and limonene can be dangerous on Skin Deep (cosmetic safety) website, have you heard of this? and do you think we should be concern about the linalool and limonene in the milk cleanser?

Sorry Anonymous, I'm 4 days late on replying!
I have also heard that Linalool & Limonene is "unsafe". I'm no scientist so I can't give you a valid answer. However, I think the reason why some people fine linalool & limonene unsafe is because it is a derivative of terpene which is related to turpentine.
I hope that helps!

My skin is oily type. So could you tell me the difference btw cleansing milk n cleansing foam/soap? is this better if i use a cleansing foam instead? Is this cleansing milk can wash away all dirt and oil, or it's just better than a foam at moisterizing? Thanks!

Oops 8 days late! I'm so bad with comments!
A cleansing milk can be wiped off with tissue or rinsed off with water. There is usually no detergent in a cleansing milk so it doesn't foam as much as a cleansing foam (or at all in my experience). I'd say it's more gentle than a cleansing foam? It is also more moisturizing.
A cleansing foam can only be rinsed off and some are very stripping make your skin drier and over-produce oil!

Can you use the cleansing milk in the morning and the freshening water at night?

Hi Anon,
I'd recommend doing the OPPOSITE. Use the cleansing milk at night & the freshening water in the morning. If you wear makeup or if your face gets really oily throughout the day, use the cleansing milk to gently clean your face & pores.
While if you use the freshening water in the morning, it'll just remove any residue from night creams or impurities on your pillow. I'd put the freshening water in the fridge too to wake my skin up in the morning!

Oh okay thanks! And I haven't used them yet, but can you wash the cleansing milk off with water instead of cotton balls?

Does the cleansing milk wash your makeup off?

If you do have this cleansing milk, just try what works for you. The Body Shop says you can remove with just water but I prefer not to. I find the cleansing milk leaves a bit of residue on the face when washed off with water. You can also try using a wet towel to remove the cleansing milk which is what I do.

This cleansing milk helps remove makeup. You apply it to your face, massage it all over & rinse it off or towel it off.
